More on the declining health of bees: Have Bees Become Canaries In the Coal Mine? Why Massive Bee Dieoffs May Be a Warning About Our Own Health (AlterNet)
From the article:
One class of pesticides, neonicotinoids in particular has received a lot of attention for harming bees. In late 2010, the EPA came under fire from beekeepers and pesticide watchdog organizations. This happened when Colorado beekeeper Tom Theobald spoke out about how the EPA allowed clothianidin to be used without any proof it was safe and despite the fact that the EPA’s own scientists believed it “has the potential for toxic risk to honey bees, as well as other pollinators.”

If only I could really draw this fast…

I had the idea to do this cartoon last October after reading this article on EcoSnobberySucks. But when I read in the latest issue of Mother Jones Magazine that Komen has long denied the toxic impact of bpa on human health, and after the recent Planned Parenthood debacle, I had to pile on, I mean finally draw the cartoon.

Thanks to all of the people who suggested new characters and voted! Goat barely edged out the Black Eyed Susan, and the love interest for bee–don’t worry, I think we’ll see those two someday (the BES is actually next to goat in the title panel).
Congrats and thanks to Jan Steinman for suggesting the goat! I’m not yet sure where I’ll go with her personality, but she’ll definitely be nicer than Wendy…

Get involved with LabelGMOs.org to help get GMO labelling on the 2012 ballot in California.
Success is California should portend success across the rest of the country. We could be the next France…or Hungary.

Thoughts on the potential new characters:
An angry flower: There were many flower suggestions, so the type of flower (I think I like Black Eyed Susan the best) and whether or not he/she is angry is up to you. Feel free to be specific in your vote.
A love interest for bee: Suggested by two people–my dad being one–so I had to add her.
A worm: I love worms! It’s an easy addition. Too easy?
A Politician: An interesting (and topical) suggestion from EcoChildsPlay’s Jennifer Lance. I was going to draw the politician simply as a wig, but decided to add the question mark…may go back to just the wig.
A goat: Another great backyard animal. I drew a young goat with shoes, just ‘cuz.
An egg with legs: I liked this suggestion mostly because Wendy is so silent and you’d think an egg in a shell would be as well, but I’d make him/her very chatty. However, I feel like this character already exists. Is anyone aware of an egg-with-legs cartoon character?
