I had the idea to do this cartoon last October after reading this article on EcoSnobberySucks. But when I read in the latest issue of Mother Jones Magazine that Komen has long denied the toxic impact of bpa on human health, and after the recent Planned Parenthood debacle, I had to pile on, I mean finally draw the cartoon.

It is confusing to me how a large group of Republicans can be so vehemently pro-life yet so anti the environment. Either these people don’t understand that protecting the environment from major polluters and pollutants keeps all life (humans included) free of unnecessary toxins and carcinogens (SEE LINKS BELOW), or as the bumper stickers clearly state, they simply prefer the unborn.
If you are one of these mind-boggling Republicans, remember these toxins and carcinogens get into the mother and have an immediate and drastic effect on fetuses. If anything, protect the earth from harmful toxins for the fetuses. You won’t have to call yourselves “environmentalists”, call yourselves “Fetus Purifiers”, or something of the like…I’m sure you’re quite clever.
By the way, there are even Republicans environmentalists. You can join them (or him).
It’s never too late to stop cutting off your nose to ensure the major polluting industries that back your politician keep making insane profits (sharing none of the gains yet all of the “unforeseen” losses) while making us sick. I think that’s how the saying goes…

I don’t see my brother-in-law, Bob too often. We disagree on just about every major thing two people could disagree on. However, we love each other and enjoy one another’s company. So even though Bob likes to provoke (much like his hero Glenn Beck) sometimes it’s best to put political/religious/social differences aside and enjoy being together.
Our politcal views should not force us to dislike family members, friends, colleagues, neighbors or strangers. It’s ok to disagree and move on. Look for reasons to love one another. Love is bigger than politics. Love unites. Let’s love more.

Below are the eleven most-clicked cartoons of 2011 (based on clicks from the sites where they were published–ie. Greenpeace, Wend Magazine, Center for Media and Democracy, ElephantJournal, PlanetSave, Ecopolitology, Ecolutionist, etc…).
Personally, I like a few different ones that didn’t make this list, but the people have spoken (or clicked). They are shared top to bottom in chronological order (oldest to newest) as opposed to order of popularity.
January 18, 2011 “The Aging Activist”

January 24, 2011 “The Republican Triple Threat”

February 23, 2011 “Loaded Breasts and Loaded Guns”

March 4, 2011 “A Special Thanks to Tim DeChristopher”

April 5, 2011 “What You Heard vs What you Remembered”

June 23, 2011 “The Green Republican”

This one inspired an email from the “Green Republican” himself. Bob Inglis wrote:
Joe, I love “The Green Republican.” My kids thought that the line “We’re kids, not idiots” was especially hilarious. Best regards, Bob
July 7, 2011 “‘Thinking’ Like a Climate Skeptic”

August 10, 2011 “Michelle Bachmann’s Lights are on but Nobody’s Home”

October 12, 2011 “Wrong and Wrongerer: How Both Sides of the Aisle Address Climate Change”

November 9, 2011 “Coal ‘Mine’”

November 22, 2011 “Tuna to Greenpeace: Help”

So as not to neglect my two favorite little ‘greenies’, the below cartoon was the most popular Hank D and the Bee cartoon from 2011. “D-U-M Dumb!”

Happy New year, all!
Looking forward to another year of eco-cartoonery…

Big Coal may be molding our youth with pro-coal propaganda, but worry not, Big Coal also offers a “green” video to teachers called “The Greening of Planet Earth,” which says that “our world is deficient in carbon dioxide, and a doubling of atmospheric CO2 is very beneficial.”
Doubling the CO2 is good for you. By you they mean their bottom line. Afterall, to Big Coal “you” are either a means to drive profit or block profit. They’re doing what they can to make sure our children do not grow up and do the latter. Of course, they’re also making sure our children grow up with an increased risk of asthma, premature death, and mercury-related illness.
Fortunately, the EPA just set new rules to limit mercury and other toxic emissions. As David Roberts of Grist states, “It will save tens of thousands of lives every year and prevent birth defects, learning disabilities, and respiratory diseases. It will make America a more decent, just, and humane place to live.”
David, and EPA Administrator Lisa Jackson, must not have gone to a Coalementary School. However, these folks did!

Asia Pulp and Paper (APP), the same company Greenpeace influenced Mattel to stop working with, has been destroying Indonesian rainforests to make Paseo-brand tissue products. These tissues are in many major supermarket chains and as Greenpeace points out, “Paseo products have no recycled content — they’re made of 100% virgin tree fiber. Worse, those trees come from pulpwood plantations that are eating into Indonesia’s rainforests and destroying the last Sumatran tiger habitat.”
Worse still, APP refers to the brand as “fully sustainable” (hence the cartoon) and “100% made in the USA”.
Great marketing, fellas!
To help Greenpeace help the rainforests you can sign a petition to tell stores to stop selling the “fastest growing bath tissue brand“. You can also become a rainforest activist by taking the Paradise Forests Defenders Pledge.
The rainforests are worth it!

Although this cartoon appears to be an even and nonpartisan attack at both sides of the aisle, it is not an exact representation of how I feel. I am sickened by the majority of the leaders on the right (and their lies to protect their corporate cronies), whereas I am disappointed with much of the left and their lack of meaningful action (which protects their corporate cronies).
However, it is depressingly important to remember that the inaction (for the most part) of the left during this administration is worlds better than the inevitable weakening of all types of environmental protections under a Republican Prez.
As David Roberts shares (in his Grist article linked below)
For eight years, the Bush administration did everything in its power to weaken, delay, or block the natural evolution of clean air and water laws. Its mercury and smog standards were half-assed and rejected by courts, and it famously refused to open the email EPA sent to kick off the rulemaking process on carbon regulations. When Bush left, EPA was confronted with an enormous backlog of work — regulations that, by law, had to be updated.
So that’s where we are. Inaction trumps a full on attack on the earth (and earthlings).
I won’t go on–that’s why I link articles below my cartoons–but remember, at election time, when given the choice of Wrong and Wrongerer, please choose Wrong.
You’ll be right-ish.
