The Little Yellow Byrd in the Coal Mine Sends Warning!

West Virgina politicians have long stood in the way of progress towards a clean energy future. Well, Senator Robert Byrd (D-WV), the infamous coal-loving nonagenarian, has recently warned his state that they might want to get with the times.

We’ll see how this effects his once-thought-to-be-guaranteed NO vote on the bipartisan climate and clean energy bill…

Mean Joe Green #78: Writing the Perfect Protest Sign

Rule #1: Resort to name calling/labeling
Rule #2: Never consider the other side’s motivation
Rule #3: Refer to rule 1 and 2.

I wish these folks were protesting the end result of the actual chain of events that will lead to their future joblessness, which is:
Decreasing demand for coal (due to health concerns for earthlings and earth)=lost jobs for coal miners=find another similar job to suit your skills=can’t because factory jobs have long been shipped overseas to skirt environmental regulations and to exploit cheaper labor=PICKET THAT!–picket lost middle class jobs, the shrinking middle class, and the growing disparity between the rich and poor!

These good people have a right to be angry–but not at the “Treehuggers” who want to put an end to our dependence on fossil fuels. Their hostility needs to be directed at the coal (throw in oil, plastic, and biotech) industry fat cats who have long made billions while poisoning the world (poisoning the world poisons those who live in said world).

CO2 Isn’t Good for You…It’s GREAT!!! (cartoon)

Mean Joe Green #75: CO2 Isn’t Good for You…It’s GREAT!!!

It’s true! According to the very intelligent folks at CO2isgreen, who have direct ties to Oil and Coal industry big wigs, more CO2 is better for us!

The Oil and Coal industries both have unlimited amounts of money, the bulk of which–I am certain–goes to research and development to make this world a better, cleaner place. So if they start a campaign called CO2isgreen with ads stating well-researched facts such as, “Higher CO2 levels than we have today would help the earth’s ecosystems…” and “more CO2 results in a ‘greener’ earth.” then, doggummit, I believe them (and I’m sure Bill McKibben does as well)!

Scroll down please. This cartoon is two panels, one on top of the other.

Mean Joe Green #70: Big Coal Claims Climate Bill Unfair

Originally posted on RedGreenandBlue.org on 8/7/09

10 Democratic Representatives from coal-dependent states sent a letter to Obama sharing that they will not support the Waxman-Markey climate and energy bill.

Sens. Sherrod Brown (Ohio), Debbie Stabenow (Mich.), Carl Levin (Mich.), Robert Casey (Penn.), Arlen Specter (Penn.), Robert Byrd (W.Va.), Jay Rockefeller (W.Va.), Evan Bayh (Ind.), Russell Feingold (Wis.), and Al Franken (Minn.) signed the letter saying a climate bill should “include provisions to maintain a level playing field for American manufacturing.”

A LEVEL PLAYING FIELD?!?!? Big Coal is complaining (to their senators apparently) that they are concerned about a level playing field. That is HILARIOUS!

$11,000 to show your “love” for coal by jumping out of a plane?!

If the coal industry’s ringtone didn’t kill the hopes and dreams of the renewable energy revolution, this certainly will.

Mean Joe Green #51: The New Face of the Energy Industry Fat Cats

Originally posted on RedGreenandBlue.org on 2/13/09

The times are-a-changing. On the way out are the days of big oil and coal fat cats running ruining the energy policy of our great nation.

Putting profit above all else, these clowns have dirtied our nation’s air and water and have stood in the way of energy and fuel-related progress for decades.

With $62.2 billion in the latest version of the Economic Stimulus Package going to environmental initiatives, said fat cats will surely live a comfortable existence as they ease into their “golden years”, but the new energy czars will be leading the way deriving energy and fuel from such sources as; wind, solar, waves, algae, cellulosic ethanol, and much more…

…Leading our great nation to a clean, energy independent future!

The EPA’s Appeals Board ruled last Thursday that coal-fired power plants must limit CO2 emissions.

Good news! Although it’s shocking that it took this long for a ruling that would limit CO2 emissions from new coal-fired power plants…

…Equally shocking is the fact that it took me since Thursday to come up with this very average cartoon to immortalize said ruling.

Mean Joe Green #3: ‘Clean’ Coal!?

Originally posted on RedGreenandBlue.org on 3/29/08
Both of our “green” democratic candidates were recently heard stumping for “clean” coal technologies! I have two big problems with this: 1. There is no such thing as “clean” coal (see #2), And, 2. We are decades away from clean “coal” technology being widely deployed anyway. In the same amount of time we could deploy an arsenal of solar and wind farms that could give us a similar amount of electricity without the mercury, carbon, and particulate pollution. All the while, keeping our mountains in tact!

“Clean” Coal is a joke — so this cartoon pretty much writes itself…
