“America Will do What’s Right…”

Inspired by the 70 year-old Winston Churchill quote: “In the long run, Americans will always do the right thing — after exploring all other alternatives.”

“FUGMO”: The Anti-GMO Mascot

Writers, Bloggers, Photographers, Cartoonists, please feel free to place the FUGMO seal of disapproval on any of your anti-GMO work. Readers, you are invited to add the seal to your avatar.
FUGMO says: “F U, GMOs!”

By the way, my cartoon website (and any other website speaking truth to corporate power) may get shut down if the SOPA legislation passes. It’s internet censorship. It kills the freedom of speech and today is the day to take action.

America: Land of Opportunity (to get cancer)

“Moving to America will increase your cancer risk by 400%.”

In a recent Ted Talk, Robyn O’Brien (author of “The Unhealthy Truth: How Our Food Is Making Us Sick and What We Can Do About It.”) recently shared her insight as to why moving to America will increase your cancer risk by 400%.

This information has been ignored for too long and is definitely the reason President Obama tasked his Cancer Panel with studying the long-term effects of exposure to known carcinogens and environmental toxins.

…And maybe it’s the reason so many empathetic (sic) politicians pushed for a US/Mexico border wall a few years back. They didn’t want to increase the risk of cancer for the immigrants. Those who signed the bill, I apologize for once thinking you were archaic, xenophobic, nationalists. It is now quite clear that you are all a bunch of sweethearts.

Stay sweet.

Our Solar System: 2100

Too bad RoundUp resistant weeds aren’t a nutritious superfood or a zero-emission superfuel, considering the weeds now infest about 11 million acres. The coverage of the controversial weed is now five times greater than three years prior, and David Mortensen, Penn State weed scientist, shares, “There is reason to believe this trend will continue into the future.”

If the weed infestation keeps growing apace the approximately 37 billion acres of Earth’s land will be infested in about 15 years and the 9 trillion acres of ocean would take another 25. I just rounded my projection in the cartoon’s title up to the year 2100 because, hey, I’m an optimist.

Obviously my math projections above are in jest, but with studies linking RoundUp to cancer, cell-damage, birth defects, soil depletion, groundwater pollution and more, I’d say it’s time to start looking for a RoundUp-resistant-weed resistant planet.

Exposed: Why the GOP wants to eliminate Clean Air Act provisions [cartoon]

Whether we can believe this see-through-elephant-trunk footage or not, the possibility that elephants have a triple fitration system within their trunks has to have some credence. Otherwise, why on earth would leading Republicans try to make it easier for big polluters to further pollute the air we (their consitituents, and the rest) breathe?

From Greenpeace: “Every year, in the US alone, fine particle emissions from power plants are believed to cut short the lives of 30,000 people. Every year, 38,000 heart attacks, 12,000 hospital admissions and an additional 550,000 asthma attacks are a result of power plant pollution.”

…but who needs clean air?

Here Comes Trouble

Recent news of the habitable planet that circles a star called Gliese 581, and the ensuing article in the Huffington Post, by James Napoli inspired this little cartoon. The news is also reminiscent of one of my favorite children’s books Wump World, by Bill Peet.

Health Care Reform Bill Signed! (need to fix an old cartoon)

“Health Care Reform Bill Signed! (need to fix an old cartoon)” reposted from WendMag’s Greenery page.
“When Climate Change and Health Care Reform Collide” from 9/15/09 (see revision below this cartoon)

Revision made 3/23/10 after Obama signed the Health Care Reform Bill that, among other things, allows people with preexisting conditions to receive health care.

Sure, it’s a lot less funny, but it’s also a lot less depressing. Of course, this joke is two-sided–Health Care reform and the state of the environment are both being addressed in the cartoon. The Health Care bill was signed today so the preexisting conditions part of the joke is null–but the fact that Mother Nature still needs immediate care is an issue.

Will we “get her taken care of?” And will it be “right away?”…

Mean Joe Green #78: Writing the Perfect Protest Sign

Rule #1: Resort to name calling/labeling
Rule #2: Never consider the other side’s motivation
Rule #3: Refer to rule 1 and 2.

I wish these folks were protesting the end result of the actual chain of events that will lead to their future joblessness, which is:
Decreasing demand for coal (due to health concerns for earthlings and earth)=lost jobs for coal miners=find another similar job to suit your skills=can’t because factory jobs have long been shipped overseas to skirt environmental regulations and to exploit cheaper labor=PICKET THAT!–picket lost middle class jobs, the shrinking middle class, and the growing disparity between the rich and poor!

These good people have a right to be angry–but not at the “Treehuggers” who want to put an end to our dependence on fossil fuels. Their hostility needs to be directed at the coal (throw in oil, plastic, and biotech) industry fat cats who have long made billions while poisoning the world (poisoning the world poisons those who live in said world).

Tim Hurst’s recent article in Red, Green, and Blue highlights John McCain’s talk on taking care of the environment–in the case of the article, specifically as it relates to renewable energy.

Sorry John, but not showing up to cast the deciding vote on important energy incentives that would promote renewables, speaks louder than words I’m afraid.

I’m also afraid that sometimes mere talk wins out
